Let’s talk, Whey Protein Supplements!
Whey protein can be a superhero in helping you meet your protein requirements. When comparing whey protein to other protein sources such as meat, it’s generally:
- Cheap
- Quick
- Convenient
Although there are a million different protein supplements out there, whey protein is whey protein. It’s all generally the same, so be careful not to get sucked into marketing jargon that makes you pay more than you should for your supplement.
There are two types of whey proteins; Isolate and Concentrate. Choosing which option comes down to personal preferences.
Here are some things to consider when choosing your type of whey protein:
Cost: Concentrate usually comes with a more budget-friendly price tag because it requires less processing. Isolate, being more refined, can be pricier. Consider your budget while choosing the right option for your fitness goals.
Protein Content: One of the key differences lies in protein content. Whey isolate is processed to remove most of the fat and lactose, leaving you with a product that is 90% or more pure protein and less calories. Whey concentrate contains more fat and lactose and typically ranges from 70% to 80% protein content. It also contains slightly more calories.
Digestibility: Whey isolate may help if you have lactose intolerance or a sensitive stomach. The additional processing removes most of the lactose, making it easier to digest. Otherwise, whey concentrate may be a tastier option with a little more flavour.
In summary, whey isolate is more expensive, a few less calories, can be less flavourful, and more digestible when compared to whey concentrate.
For the average person, the higher price point of isolate isn’t worth the caloric difference, however it could be worth the digestibility difference.
Whether you opt for whey isolate or whey concentrate, incorporating a protein powder into your diet can be a game-changer. Experiment with different flavours and types to see what you like best. Each has its unique benefits, so choose based on your goals, preferences, and budget.
