Consistency is the key to success with anything. But as we discussed in The 1% Rule and No Zero Days, this doesn’t mean going 100% every day. It means putting in some level of effort each day. We aren’t looking for A+ effort here and there, we’re looking for B+ effort long term.
What is the easiest way to be adaptable and consistent each day?
Meet: The Dial of Consistency
Think of it like the volume dial for the radio in your car, you can turn it up or down based on how you’re feeling.
Same can be true with the Dial of Consistency, you can turn the level of effort up or down based on your work and family schedule, stress, how you’ve slept, and your motivation level. The dial goes from 1-10 and the idea is that even when you turn the dial down to 1, you’re still doing something to work towards your goals. And when you’re full of energy, have time on your hands, and you’re motivated, you can crank that dial up to a 10.
Here’s how this exercise works:
Create your 10: If you could have a perfect day, what habits and activities would you be doing? Perhaps it’s a workout, hitting your step goal, going for a walk with your family, packing a healthy lunch, meal prepping, hitting your protein and fibre goal; whatever it looks like for you, but it should be meaningful and specific to you. Your 10 will be different from my 10.
Create your 1: What is the minimum you can do in one day that would help you work towards your goals? Perhaps it’s just going for a walk with your family or packing a healthy lunch for the next day.
Now fill in numbers in between: Again, these items should be meaningful and specific to you. For example, if we included something like meditation in your dial, but you have no interest in meditating, then you obviously wouldn’t include this item in your dial. So this is why we like to have our clients complete their own dials.
Putting it all together
You can do an arts and crafts project by making it an actual dial, or you can keep it simple with a little chart. I prefer the latter with clients for simplicity.
Now that you’ve made your dial/chart, put it somewhere visible so that you see it every morning (the reminder is key) and voila! You’re set to rock and roll with your dial!
