Everyone knows they should reduce processed foods and increase their water, fruit, and vegetable intake… The list of benefits goes on and on, so we won’t bore you with them.
Instead, let’s aim our focus on a mindset shift to make this habit more practical:
Adding to your Diet
When we look at changing our diet, we often focus on the things we should be eliminating from our diets; like processed foods for example. The problem is, the more we try to restrict these foods, the more we crave them. And then when we eat said foods, there is often binging and guilt associated with it.
What if instead of focusing on eliminating, we focused on adding to your diet? Adding water, adding fruits, adding vegetables, adding more healthy whole foods.
Adding more of these items will naturally reduce the other things because you can only eat so much in a day.
More-so, focusing on adding to your diet creates a more positive headspace with your foods and diet. You notch ‘wins’ under your belt for every successful ‘add’ versus feeling guilt when you focus on eliminating.
The change doesn’t have to be all at once either. For example, here is an easy way to get started:
- Week 1: Add a cup of water when you wake up, 1 banana at breakfast, and 1 serving of veggies at dinner.
- Week 2: Add a cup of water when you wake up and before dinner, a smoothie with breakfast, salad at lunch, and veggies with dinner
- Week 3: Add a cup of water when you wake up and before lunch and dinner, a smoothie with oatmeal and berries for breakfast, salad with protein for lunch, and veggies with dinner.
- etc.
Even if you stopped adding to your diet after week 3, you’re still likely better ahead with your diet than when you started.
Improving your diet doesn’t always require complex strategies. Sometimes, it’s the simplest changes that yield the most significant results. By upping your water intake and incorporating a colourful array of fruits and vegetables into your daily diet, you’re not just nourishing your body; you’re fuelling it for success!
